About the PedWest crossing
PedWest, known in Tijuana as El Chaparral, is San Ysidro's west pedestrian crossing (CBP code 250407). It sits next to Plaza Viva Tijuana and lets out near the Las Americas outlets in San Diego.
Unlike PedEast (the main pedestrian crossing, on the east side), PedWest / El Chaparral has historically had more limited hours. Before planning your walk across, check the current hours on CBP's official site.
Available lanes
For pedestrians, the lanes vary by crossing, and CBP doesn't always publish all of them (often just General and Ready Lane), so you'll see "No data" for any lane it doesn't report. Here's what you'll typically find:
- General: any traveler with valid documents.
- Ready Lane: only for RFID-enabled cards: U.S. passport card, Border Crossing Card (laser visa), green card or trusted traveler cards. Passport books are not accepted. Usually faster.
- SENTRI / Global Entry: travelers enrolled in the trusted traveler program. The fastest lane.
Tips for a faster crossing
- Some people search for it as 'El Chaparral' and others as 'PedWest': it's the same west pedestrian crossing at San Ysidro.
- If El Chaparral is closed or on reduced hours, your walking alternative is PedEast (on the San Ysidro page).
- Have an RFID-enabled card ready. Ready Lane is faster for pedestrians too, but passport books are not accepted there.
- CBP doesn't always publish wait times for every pedestrian lane; we show 'No data' when there's no official number.
Frequently asked questions
Are PedWest and El Chaparral the same?
Yes. PedWest is the official name of San Ysidro's west pedestrian crossing; in Tijuana it's known as El Chaparral. Same place, next to Plaza Viva Tijuana.
Is El Chaparral open 24 hours?
Not necessarily. PedWest / El Chaparral has had more limited hours than PedEast. Check the current hours with CBP before you walk over.
What's the difference between El Chaparral (PedWest) and PedEast?
They're San Ysidro's two pedestrian crossings. PedEast (east) is the main one, with longer hours and right by the trolley; PedWest / El Chaparral (west) is on the Plaza Viva Tijuana side.
